The Jesters
We all come with trauma.
One of the most powerful figures within the royal court is considered to be The Jester. For only The Jester is allowed to denigrate and "criticize" the king through a sort of humor. The purpose of this is dual-layered in its meaning:The first layer of such is meant to test the king in his worthiness to be king, for if you are unable to withstand criticism in form of jest, then you are no king truly at all. The second layer is a bit more complex; for you see, a jest may be used as mask to a memory most traumatic... something still remembered, but wishing to be forgotten. But be you a truly worthy king, you CANNOT forget - it is not allowed. For the king, despite his many varied and carried unpleasantries, it cannot be denied that he is truly one thing in utmost penultimate example - strong. Strong of mind, strong of will, strong moralistic character. And if he is to fail prey to his own weakness, and wish to push away the trauma of his own past, then he is nothing but a mere peasant under the kingdom of his own mind; and most definitely is he not a king of any other kind.
The purpose of not forgetting the past is not simply to reintegrate it nor to repeat in new form, but to learn from it. For only once you truly learn from the past are you thus comfortable and able in remembering it - in KEEPING it in both memory and form.
The Jesters were strong, for even through the darkness did they triumph over the darkness therein amplified of their own souls. The Jesters are the memory of humanity that they wish to leave behind, but they simply WILL NOT ALLOW IT. Because it is only when a Jester is NOT TRULY NEEDED can it be said that the king has in all-truth become The King.
